Mac May-Bears, a sixteen year old Junior Musher, has come to Windward Kennels to train his dogs for the 2007 Junior Iditarod. He brought along 13 of his dogs, some of whom were from our dog yard. Mac entered his first mid-distance race and last weekend, we made the 2.5 hour drive north, into the mountains of Cantwell. The Cantwell Classic Junior race coincided with a 200 mile race for the adults, and followed the hilly Denali Highway for thirty miles to the junior division turnaround. There was a mandatory 1 hour break, and then teams made the 30 mile dash back to Cantwell. Mac's finishing time was around 11.5 hours, and he came home with the red latern award, a coveted symbol in dog mushing that honors the last team home.
